Men at Work

08 Sep

On Saturday, Sept. 4, the Green Horde hosted the BGSU Mens Rugby team and SUNY Brockport as they kicked off their seasons in the new collegiate Division I bracket. The Cleveland men also got in a game against the BGSU C side as a tune-up for their Sept. 11 game against Akron.

The East Side men had little trouble with the newest Falcon ruggers. They looked dominant on all sides of the ball, winning and stealing scrums at will, looking fluid in the line-outs as well as tackling and running hard. The pressure kept the boys from BGSU on their heels throughout most of the game. The Green Horde’s stonewall-like defense left their foes scoreless, allowing players in the backs as well as the forwards to cross the line and touch down. The news wasn’t all good for Cleveland, though. At times, play was sloppy and disorganized, with command and communication breaking down. The men in green also had trouble in varying their angles of attack. Though effective, their plan of attack made scoring more difficult than it had to be. When all was said and done, the Green Horde came out on top and BGSU’s C side went home defeated and, for some, wounded.

The news wasn’t all bad for the visiting Falcons, though. Their A and B sides were successful in their games against their New York counterparts. The B side won convincingly, but their victory paled in comparison to the A side’s 140+ point victory – and shut out – of the Brockport A side. Not only does that net BGSU a convincing victory, but it puts a new single-game scoring record in the books. Rocco Mauer and Nick Viviani were only two of the men to contribute to the Falcons’ big win.
